Brody Pinyan had what he called one of the worst games of his football career against Hayden last week throwing 2 interceptions. This week things were completely different as Senior Quarterback Brody Pinyan threw for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns. First one coming with 2:28 left in the first quarter when he found Junior Eli Buse on a 15 yard out route in the endzone. Buse led the Redskins in yardage racking up 63 yards on just 3 catches. His other catches were for 27 yards and 21 yards.
Oneonta's 3rd drive of the night resulted in a touchdown with David Hall rumbling in to the endzone from 5 yards out with 7:10 left in the 2nd quarter. On that drive Pinyan found SR WR Andrew McAlpine for a 31 yard reception and Buse for 21 yards. With Oneonta leading 14-0 and the defense playing lights out things were looking good for the Redskins.
Cleburne County's next drive resulted in a touchdown that was setup by a 50 yard screen pass to running-back Rico Jordan Jr. that got the Tigers down to the 1 yard line. Rustin Roberts would punch it in the very next play from the 1 yard line with 5:56 left in the 2nd quarter.
After a couple of short drives by both teams Oneonta was setup with very good field position at the Cleburne County 44 yard line. After a few plays getting the ball down the field to the Tigers 26 yard line, the Redskins went for it on 4th down with Pinyan finding a wide open Riley McGill standing alone at the goal line with :56 seconds left in the half. That touchdown and extra point would put the Skins up 21-7 going into the half.
Oneonta's defense the whole night would shut down the Tigers running game only giving up 55 yards on 26 carries. Sophomore LB Luke Hodge would lead the defense in tackles with 8 on the night. David Hall and Beau Ragsdale would each have 6 tackles a piece for the night. Marquis Mitchell would continue raining havoc on the Tigers offensive line as he racked up 7 tackles at the defensive tackle position.
In the second half for both teams were a lot of short drives as both defenses tightened up. It took until 4:41 left in the 4th quarter for someone to score. Reese Morrison would thread a needle on his pass to Gage Harcrow for 50 yards to get the Tigers back within a touchdown. The extra point was blocked by David Hall to keep them at 13.
Needing a few first downs the Oneonta offensive line and running backs made a few big first down runs led by Collin Moon and David Hall. David had his 2nd straight 100 yard rushing performance for Oneonta.
Phil Phillips on the play of the defense, "Just can't say enough about our defense. Just a supreme effort. JD Whited does such a good job as it makes life easier as we grow a personality on offense." Phillips also thought that Pinyan responded the way a senior should. "Made some really nice throws and some nice reads. We have to have that, our offensive line had their hands full with a really good front and in the second half when you are trying to use the clock they had 2 more than we could block and we managed to get a few first downs. David and Collin really looked nice on that last drive."
With the 21-13 win Oneonta improves to 1-1 and 1-0 in region play. Oneonta will head back home next week as they will welcome in #2 ranked Hokes Bluff which will be led by Darrian Meads.
